This is a tough post for me. I have prayed about it and grieved over it. There is an ache in my heart, and it is for the Body of Christ. I feel this ache in my very bones… Many of you, even those that I love dearly, may not agree with what I am about to share, but I plead with you to hear me out.
There is an oppression I am feeling in this month of October. I hear the echo of a time long ago;
a time when God was not happy with the leadership of the children of Israel. Ahab had married Jezebel, and Baal worship flourished. The prophet Elijah was making his mark as God’s heart was heard in his words to God’s people. God’s words, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me, ” had been forgotten by many, and the clarity that they had known upon leaving Egypt had blurred under the shadow of their neighbors and their neighbor’s gods. Included in that worship was sexual promiscuity and child sacrifice. Neither would please God!
Today, the prophet in me heard that same heart of God through Elijah! Today was the third day I woke with pain in my very bones and it took me straight to the Throne room! My heart was heavy as I asked God why I was feeling this pain. Immediately I saw the bones as a foundation for the physical body, and a foundation for the Body of Christ. Just as quickly I saw the same skeletal symbol decorating store windows and homes around the Globe, representing another body of believers whose belief is in opposition to God. My heart began to hurt more than my bones.
When I was a teenager, I “played” with a Ouija board. It was exciting to think that it could “speak” to us. Sadly, those who were with me were members of my high school Bible study. We were interested in the power and intrigue of the spirit realm. Unfortunately, we were looking in the wrong place as God’s children. I’ve since repented, but have never forgotten how easy it was to be drawn into “the dark side.” It will always stand in opposition to God.
I ache as I watch many who are close to me reading about sorcery and “familiars.” We are playing with fire and putting our vulnerable and trusting children in harm’s way. Elijah would have heard from God and made sure that the right person got the message! Well, I received a clear message today, and I wept as I repented for any part that I played in blurring spiritual lines by blending the purity of Almighty God with a wrong perception of this October 31st “celebration.” This “harmless” fun began as a means to keep away the spirits of the dead who were thought to roam the earth at this time of year. As His child, I only want to draw attention to God’s Holy Spirit, not the other side of the spiritual realm.
I wept and repented on behalf of past and present generations, as well as the Body of Christ! I cannot help but remember the judgement that came to God’s people because of the influence of an ungodly king. But we are no better if we’ve begun to allow ourselves to blend the worship of our God, who represents life, faith and light, with the “worship” of another who represents death, fear and darkness.
When Jesus said, “To whom much is given, much is required” He was sharing a story that pointed to the religious rulers of the day. Their hypocrisy was palpable and the rebuke rings in my parental ears today! I can picture Jesus holding one of my grandchildren on His lap as He says, “If anyone causes one of these little ones, those who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!” (Matthew 18:6-7, NIV) I don’t want any parent, or grandparent, to cause one of their little ones to stumble… even if they never intended to open the door to the wrong spiritual dimension.
But the Body of Christ needs to repent! It has so “whitewashed” the truth that Jesus would be mentioning “whited sepulchres” (cemeteries and mausoleums) if He were standing on this Earth today! We are those spiritual/religious leaders and we could be leading our children into a place of confusion, compromise and spiritual danger!
Jesus went to hell for three days to conquer His greatest enemy, not to meet an old buddy! God hates sin! He can’t look on it, that’s why He turned His back on Jesus when He carried our sin to the cross! God’s enemy introduced sin to humanity, and he still finds a way to subtly dupe God’s family with it! WAKE UP, BODY OF CHRIST!!!
Lately, the parable of the sheep and goats flickers through my mind. The entire parable is about those who think they are serving God. It’s chilling to think that ANY of us could be hearing, “Depart from Me. I never knew you.”
In the Jewish calendar, the Fall season is a time of repentance before God, reflection and new beginnings. It is a time to look inward and adjust each life accordingly. For the rest of us, Fall represents a return to cooler temperatures, colorful swirling leaves and decorated homes. We seem to focus on the external. We try to outdo ourselves when it comes to Halloween costumes and decorations, never thinking about what really happens as “Trick or Treat” approaches. Sadly, many are deceived into thinking this is an innocent celebration where we can pretend to be someone we’re not; dress up and be a kid again for one night of the year. In Ephesians 6:12, the Bible clearly states that we should oppose wicked spirit forces, not celebrate with them.
Almighty God is the God of LIFE, not death! As God was bringing the Israelites into the promised land He gave this warning, “Let no one be found among you… who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the Lord your God.” (Deut 18: 10-13, NIV ). God didn’t even want the nations near His people so that they could influence them in the Promised Land! And then there is this reminder, “There must never be anyone among you who . . . consults ghosts or spirits, or calls up the dead.” (Deuteronomy 18:10-12, The Jerusalem Bible)
My only reason for writing any of this is that I would like each member of the Body of Christ to be individually asking God to share His heart with them. In 2 Corinthians 6:17, the Bible tells us not to merge false religious practices with the worship of God. I urge you to hear His cry to be separate from those who would oppose Him, and the righteousness, holiness and purity that He stands for. If we embrace those things that oppose Him, we oppose Him.
Jesus paid too high a price for each one who has personally accepted His great sacrifice. Think and pray as you begin to make choices for you and your family about what you view, what you read and what you believe in, especially during this season. Ask God what He thinks about your seasonal practices. Please… do it today!
If you hear God’s heart cry to turn away from all that “appears” harmless, ask His forgiveness and turn back to Him, then this blog will have done its’ job…
